Thriller set on an island Retreat – Sarah Pearse
Welness retreat set on a Devon island
We’re off to a gorgeous welness retreat on an island off the coast of Devon. It’s a fictional setting but well, is it? There’s a small selection of guests who each have something to hide. When there is a murder, Detective Elin Warner comes to investigate. This is a small world – Elin’s boyfriend Will worked as architect here and Will’s sister Farrah works there as manager.

A book to take you to a wellness retreat on an island

Think about what it would be like to be on a desert island at a wellness retreat surrounded by water, a hotel with everything at your disposal, a beach and all that fresh air….
Now scrap that as you are in a novel with Sarah Pearse and she is not going to let you have a nice time. Her characters go through hell and back – what with a killer on the loose and a murder or two.
I loved the way each character got to speak so we discovered a real insight into them as individuals. I didn’t like any of them but they all had secrets to share and their relationshops with the island and with each other were great to discover. Detective Elin Warner is back from the first book The Sanatorium and she too has links to the island which made it all very interesting indeed. This has links and twists galore and I got wrapped up and trapped in a very intricate web.
The setting!? Oh my. It might be a fictional island but this felt very real, very Shutter Island in many ways. An abandoned school and outreach centre with a dark past. A rock which marks the island known as Reapers Rock. Think of all the connotations that name has and you wouldn’t be far wrong!
What was a real thrill was discovering the first murder or was it a case of accidental death of someone who wasn’t even supposed to be on the island. Imagine being trapped on this retreat with no means of escape.
A thriller that might make me think again of wanting to try out a wellness retreat. Well, at least one on an island….
