The Best Enemy – Sergio Olguin

The former editor of Nuestro Tiempo magazine has been murdered, apparently during the course of a burglary gone wrong, but investigative reporter Verónica Rosenthal has her doubts.

Love this series from Bitter Lemon Press and this is no different! Think it’s best to read the ones before but still good as a standalone.

A novel to transport you to Buenos Aires and the Middle East

A much more personal and reflective novel I feel than the ones before. Veronica does a lot of contemplating and delves into her childhood and relationships with her family members. that makes what happens all the more sad!  This works really well as the novel progresses.

It was also a nod to the situation in Palestine. Sometimes this part of the story felt forced but I still wanted to read it and explore what the author was doing. It was multi-layered which made it thought provoking and it did make me think of this series in a more international way.

The international aspect of it, the politics of Buenos Aires and here, the Middle East, was nicely done and it does stand out in the thriller genre for me. Kudos to the translator Miranda France for some tricky passages! I always think of the translator when I read – as if I am reading with them and trying to guess what the Spanish  might be.

A solid addition to this cracking series!
