Translation Thursday is always a good day but when River Run tell you about their brilliant new series of translated books then it’s even better! And they’ve given us a set of three rather fab books for someone to win. They are very special editions and also apt for Women in Translation month as although only one of the authors is a woman, all three translators are!

A bit about the books:
The Lady with the Dog – set in Russia
A collection of short stories examining Russian provincial life back in the 1800s. But don’t be fooled into thinking these are stories about farming and poverty! Oh no, turns out life back then was just as scandalous and shocking as it can be today. Women who leave their husbands, fall in love with someone else, local politics and scandal, and then there’s the schoolmaster who is scandalized by his sweetheart riding a bicycle and the woman who falls in love with a series of men, each of whom leave her in different ways.
The Princesse de Cleves – set in Paris, France
A classic of French literature and thought to be the first historical novel – or at least one of the earliest ones. It’s about a young woman who comes to court seeking a husband only to find one and then fall in love with someone else…Oh the drama!
Confessions of Zeno – set in Trieste, Italy
Ever tried or wanted to give up smoking? Know someone who has? It’s a painful and frustrating process if this man’s journey is anything to go by. He goes to see a therapist to help him but what he does is to delve into his life and story with the most unexpected of consequences…
