On a warm summer’s evening, a six year old boy rings his father to tell him the shocking news that there’s someone in the family home in Norrköping

That’s the last his father hears from him before the boy disappears without a trace.

Prosecutor Jana Berzelius leads the preliminary investigation. Together with Criminal Commissioner Henrik Levin and Criminal Investigator Mia Bolander, she tries to figure out what is behind the boy’s disappearance

The closer to the truth they get, the more personal the case becomes for Jana. He realizes that time is of the essence.

At the same time,  the ruthless Danilo Peña  wants Jana to visit him in  prison. Once she agrees, a terrible battle of wills takes over where everything is at stake and nothing is as it seems

The title translates literally as “Daddy’s Boy”

I can’t believe this is the first Emelie Schlepp novel I’ve read and I really fancied reading this one and was sent a lovely copy from Harper Collins nordic which I devoured.

Swedish Noir of this kind does feel a lot more chilling in Swedish let me tell you! The premise was interesting and I didn’t feel I was missing anything starting from book four although there are now questions I wonder about and so will definitely be seeking out the earlier books.

Jana Berzelius is a good character. Flawed but honest and in this case, she has to divide her attention between this disturbing a case and an old adversary. Imagine being a police officer of some kind and being told that unless you visit your nemesis in prison, he’ll see to it that someone you love will get ‘paid a visit’

As well as these two strands to the story there were plenty of subplots to make things even more interesting. A little romance even. However it was the prisoner Jena who I was never really sure about. Does he really have such a hold over Jana? One of those questions I have which will no doubt be answered when reading the earlier books.

But I am definitely going to!
