WOTS on in Toronto?
WOTS on next Weekend in Toronto? Well only the 27th Word on The Street that’s what! Been to and loved this festival for ever so it’s a huge pleasure to be working with them to help promote many fine writers who are big names, up and coming names and names you really don’t to miss.
So when The Booktrail was asked to showcase a few, we put up a stage, invited a few writers on it as long as they brought some Canadian food with them of course and said there would be a Booktrail Spotlight waiting for them.
So who’s first on the stage? Two brave books showing a very unique side to the Canadian culture….
Under The Visible Sky
Kate Echelin
Now this is a book I really liked. It’s a story about two girls from two very different cultures who come together and are drawn to each other thanks to their love of jazz. There’s some great Jazz references in this book with names of real clubs for any jazz fans out there so that for me was a real draw. The story itself was very interesting and shows again how cultures can come together and how no matter where you’re from, there’s always something you have in common.
So I really recommend this whilst listening to a jazz playlist of course!
The Three Sister Bar and Hotel
Katherine Govier
I do love a book which takes you back to an iconic moment in history. When I was in Saskatchewan and BC I got off a train in the middle of nowhere as I wanted to see the railways. No platforms there so you literally have to jump down as they did in the good old days – what an experience to think about how these tracks were laid an the backbreaking work it must have taken. The men who slaved for hours to allow us to cross Canada by train. Remarkable historical even and this novel really helps you to visualise it and think about what it meant and still means today.
