Well this is just lovely. Of COURSE the map and the walking trail attracted me at first. It is a major part of the book and that was such a thrill. There’s rarely such a perfect map in a story but this is just a booktrail all prepped and waiting to happen.

For the map geek in me, this was heaven. Every chapter starts with a small map detailing the next part of the journey the characters take. Imagine walking from one side of England to the other ? Coast to coast? Judging by this book, there’s going to be quite a few David Nicholls walks now and the tourist board should prepare! I met David at a talk not long after launch and he said he’d done the walk over several days and he had found memories of it. I can’t wait to do it myself!

Right, back to the story and well, it’s delightful.  Marnie is such a great character and it is lovely to read about her and her foibles. She comes out with some cracking one liners too and that made me chuckle and laugh out very loud at times. I got very invested in the relationship between her and Michael as it  develops, the same time as the walk. When they arrived at the other coast, what would happen I asked myself? Well it’s a very poignant ending.

I think what works ( apart from the map hehe) is the fact that this is a lovely and simple storyline but it’s packed with warmth, heart and soul – and those three emotions mix together to form the most amazing soundtrack as you read.
